  • Sourpuss Featured Retailer: Dead Rockers!

Posted on October 3, 2016 by Brian Aufdenberg

What is your name, and what is your job title at Dead Rockers?

My name is Lindsay Shaver, Owner aka Boss Lady

Tell us more about Dead Rockers! When did you open and what's changed since then?

DeadRockers was created in 2005, when many of the punk rock clothing and music shops in Southern California were disappearing. I decided to take matters into my own hands at the age of 18. I had just graduated high school, and began selling merch at local gigs, car shows, roller derby bouts, and anywhere else that would let me set up shop! I started selling online through our MySpace page and launched our first website the next year. In 2011, I opened my first physical retail location in Wilmington, CA. A few years later we got the opportunity to move to the infamous 4th Street, in downtown Long Beach, where we currently reside and LOVE! Earlier this year we moved next door into an even larger location. What once was a small table in the corner at a local punk show selling band merch and music has grown to become an 800 sq. ft. retail shop and online store carrying thousands of products from all over the world. Everything from patches and studs, to shower curtains, dresses, & kitschy housewares! The last few years Dead Rockers has grown tremendously, and it has been such a rad experience to watch my teenage dreams unfold!

What did you do before Dead Rockers?

I managed a hair salon & did office accounting work for a manufacturing company.

What's the best part about your job?

I love seeing customers light up when they find something they have never seen or heard before. Especially young kids who get stoked on finding a band shirt or patch they have been searching for, or an album they've been saving up cash to buy. Talking about music and meeting people from around the world is an equally awesome part. I had a lady come by the shop recently who was visiting from the Netherlands and her daughter had given her a list of things she wanted to buy from Dead Rockers, that totally made my day! To be included as a stop on people’s travel list is one of the most rewarding feelings ever.

What is your favorite thing to drink when out with friends?

I love the bubbly! It's been a sort of motto of mine, "No troubles, just bubbles", I even got it tattooed. I recently discovered Sparkling Sake...AMAZING. I also love spicy Bloody Marys with lots of pickled accoutrement!

    What is your favorite smell?

I love lavender & citrus smells, especially in candles. I also love the smell of fresh glossy postcards and printed material, if you see my sniffing a box of business cards, now you know why.

Do you have any irrational fears?

Snakes! And eels, anything slithery without legs really. I can't even walk down the reptile aisle in stores!

    Do you like horror movies?

Yes! All kinds, old and new

Have you ever fed an elephant?

No, but I'd love to! I've been up close and petted one once; their hair feels like wire!

What are you most excited about in the coming months?

I'm heading to Chicago for the first time ever, to catch the Original Misfits reuniting for Riot Fest! Also excited for some Deep Dish pizza, and to catch a game at Wrigley Stadium while out there. We also have some exciting things in the works for the shop including a Halloween Art Show & new custom built furniture that we will be offering (think coffin book shelves & studded record displays!).

Keep up with Dead Rockers here:

  • Sourpuss Feat. Retailer: Memento Mori Studios!

Posted on February 4, 2016 by Brian Aufdenberg

What is your name, and what is your job title at Memento Mori?

I’m Chris Gauthier, President of Memento Mori Studios Inc. I’ll be
answering some of these questions with the help of my best friend, Jesse &
    my wife, Jax.

Tell us more about Memento Mori! When did you open and what's changed
    since then?

We opened in June 2011, four partners consisting of two married couples.
We all gave up secure employment & spent every penny we had to fulfill our
mutual dream of opening our own shop. We started in a small space
offering quality tattoos & piercings alongside some of our favorite brands
like Sourpuss. Things took off pretty quick for us & last December we
relocated to a 5500 square foot location & have increased our staff to 13.
We also added laser tattoo removal & currently feature 8 resident
    tattooers & a well-respected piercing department.

What did you do before Memento Mori?
My partners already worked in the tattoo industry but I actually worked in
management for a large cellular company. I spent 10 years wearing a tie
to work but I gained experience & learned a lot of what I need to know
about operating a business. I always knew I was going to be self-employed
& I went to fashion college when I was 19 so I kinda wanted to have a
clothing store. Then in 2008 on a beach in Mexico the four of us realized
that we could put our dreams together & build one business utilizing all
    of our skill sets.

What's the best part about your job?
I think the best part of our jobs is getting to work with our friends &
family every day. We’ve been able to build an amazing group of creative
individuals that share our commitment to our industry & our passion for
art. It’s pretty awesome to be able to love what you do & that’s
something we don’t take for granted.

What is your favorite thing to drink when out with friends?
    Bourbon Old Fashioned

    What is your favorite smell?

Do you have any irrational fears?
Not really, I don't buy all the statistics about the likeliness of being
    attacked by a shark.

    Do you like horror movies?
Jesse – Yes, his favorite is the original Night of the Living Dead.

What are you most excited about in the coming months?
Pretty stoked to start planning our vacations/trips for later in the year.

  • Sourpuss Featured Retailer: Angry Young and Poor

Posted on December 18, 2015 by Brian Aufdenberg

What is your name, and what is your job title at Angry, Young and Poor?
Andrea Anderson - Merch Maven, Co-Owner & buyer for the shop.  We have 3 on deck owners. My husband Jeff deals with the music and music related merch & getting merch on the website, I do accessories and fashion & the retail shop, and John runs the mail order end of things.

Tell us more about Angry, Young and Poor! When did you open and what's changed since then?
ANGRY, YOUNG AND POOR began as an independent punk store on North Prince Street in Lancaster PA in 1995..We've all known each other since pre-kindergarten and have been into punk rock since the early 80s when older brothers, neighborhood punks, college radio DJs and local punk shop owners turned us onto what good music sounded like. We were tired of driving a couple of hours to Philly, Baltimore, NYC or DC every time we wanted to buy music and clothing so we opened our own shop and created a one stop punk shop for music and clothing and a local place for kids to hang out.  We immediately had a mail order (stapled together/low end) catalog that looked more like a zine.  We could never keep it up to date or find anyone around here in Amish Country to print because all the printers objected to the content. We also had a very basic website the minute the internet took off.

What did you do before Angry, Young and Poor?
I was a Certified Recreational Director in long term care - I was the head Bingo queen

What's the best part about your job?
I love still seeing kids get excited about punk & metal music, buying their first vinyl record, discovering a band, having a huge international family in the scene because of the shop and our fantastic customers worldwide, providing other DIY companies with a place to sell their merch, and giving others a place to find items they may never be exposed to otherwise because of where they live
